The plan for opening a salon was developed in early 2011. Karen began designing the floor plan and layout, which were preliminary steps in obtaining cost estimates, financing, and zoning appeals and building permits.

The opening of a home-based salon in a residential neighborhood presented its own challenges. As the zoning ordinance of the City of Goshen forbids the use of homes for most business uses, a zoning variance was required. While city zoning staff opposed the business development, neighboring property owners were overwhelmingly supportive and signed a petition in favor of the salon.

At the June 28, 2011 meeting of the Goshen Board of Zoning Appeals, Karen and Calvin presented their case for the zoning variance, along with the petition. They eventaully persuaded the Board, which unanimously approved the request.

With permits issued, construction began in July of 2011. Excavation, concrete work, and exterior framing were done by Edge Construction Services. Calvin and Karen did the remainder of the work, which including roofing, plumbing, electrical, insulation, drywall, painting, finish trim, and fixture installations.

The salon opened in November of 2011, just before the first snowfall of the season. The salon is fully ADA-compliant (handicap accessible), and meets all Indiana and Goshen building codes for a commerical establishment. The salon is licensed by the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency as a Cosmetology Salon.
